Most homeowners have no idea what half their bill means. Here's the truth.
PG&E paid billions in wildfire settlement costs and passed those liability charges to ratepayers. This line item adds approximately $12–15 to your bill every month — regardless of your area's fire risk.
~$12–15/mo · Passed through CPUC approvalPG&E signed long-term energy contracts on your behalf. When you switched to Pioneer CCA, they kept charging you for those contracts anyway.
You pay for energy you don't usePG&E gives you a small monthly baseline at ~$0.38/kWh. Every kWh above that is Tier 2 at ~$0.47/kWh. EDH homes with A/C, pools and EVs exceed Tier 1 almost year-round.
Solar eliminates Tier 2 entirelyPG&E's fee for moving electricity through their poles and wires to your home. Up over 92% since 2017 with more increases planned every year.
Solar dramatically reduces this chargeEl Dorado County's locally-owned non-profit electricity provider. They lowered generation rates 10% in 2025 — one of the few good things on your bill.
Solar eliminates most Pioneer chargesThe Bottom Line
PG&E has raised rates over 92% since 2017 — nearly doubled — and plans to keep raising them. Every year you wait, the gap between what you pay PG&E and what you could pay with solar grows wider.
What backs every audit
Your audit is built from your actual PG&E bill, validated NREL sun-hour data for your exact address, and a LIDAR scan of your roof before any contract. Fire setbacks and permitting are engineered into every design. Specific to your address. Engineered to your roof.
A solid contract guarantees your system produces at least 90% of what the audit promises. If it falls short, you should be paid the difference. In cash. Every year. For 25 years. That’s not marketing language — it’s a contract clause to insist on.
California law gives solar customers 5 days to cancel after signing. Look for a contract that extends that right all the way to installation day — you should walk away owing nothing, including any engineering or permitting done on your behalf.
“This isn’t a solar pitch. It’s a choice between electricity providers. My job is to show you the math and tell you honestly whether your house is a fit. If it isn’t, I’ll say so.”
There’s a real deadline this time
Solar reps have shouted “act now, incentives ending!” for a decade. This time it’s actually true — and I didn’t make it up. Congress did.
The OBBBA, signed July 4, 2025, killed the 30% homeowner tax credit on December 31, 2025. The commercial credit keeping today’s PPA rates low is next: projects must begin construction by July 4, 2026 — or be placed in service by December 31, 2027.
Smaller installers are already running out of safe-harbored inventory. Larger national installers locked in credits for subscribers through 2027 — which is why they can still quote today’s rates. After July 4, 2026, new-customer pricing reflects the tightening market.
If you’ve been thinking about going solar, the window for locking in today’s PPA rates is measured in weeks, not years. I’m not saying this to pressure you — I’m saying it because my job is to tell you the math, and the math changes on July 4.
Upload your bill. Get a free audit in 24 hours. If the numbers don’t work for your house, I’ll tell you. If they do, you still have every off-ramp in your contract — cancel any time before installation, $0 owed.
But if you want in, we should start the engineering work soon. LIDAR, design, permitting — all of it takes time.
